El Salvador is situated on the Pacific coast; Guatemala is to the west and Honduras to the north and east. It is the smallest Central American country, about the size of Massachusetts. Its geography is comprised mostly of mountains with a narrow coastal belt and central plateau. It is known as the Land of Volcanoes; seismic activity is frequent and sometimes very destructive. Additionally, the coastal country is extremely susceptible to hurricanes.
Future Hope's initial project is the establishing of a computer lab and education program in the community of Regalo De Dios, in Soyapango, El Salvador, classes started on January 7th, 2006. Regalo De Dios is a very low-income community composed mainly of families displaced by recent devastating earthquakes in the country.
According to data from a survey taken from the community:
- There are 16 homes in which children under 13 years of age are working.
- There are 175 families comprising 765 inhabitants.
- There are 21% of the community is considered illiterate.
- The majority of children only study until the 6th grade.
